Abstract

College students in early adulthood face various academic, social, and personal demands that require the ability to adapt and cope with difficulties constructively. One family characteristic believed to be associated with the development of this ability is birth order, although previous research has yielded inconsistent findings regarding its association with individual psychological characteristics. This study aims to determine the level of resilience among college students based on birth order and to test for differences in mean resilience scores between students who are firstborns, middle children, youngest children, and only children. The study employs a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design, as birth order is a pre-existing characteristic that was not manipulated by the researchers. The research sample consisted of 237 students from the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Humanities at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin in the 2024–2025 cohort, selected using quota sampling. Data were collected using a resilience scale based on the seven aspects identified by Reivich and Shatté. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of the descriptive analysis showed that student resilience across all birth order groups was dominated by the moderate and high categories. The ANOVA test results yielded a value of (F(3,233)=1{,}507) with (p=0{,}213), indicating that no statistically significant differences in mean resilience were found based on birth order in the research sample. These findings suggest that grouping based on birth order did not reveal significant differences in mean resilience in the context of this study. Future research could examine the relationship between resilience and other factors, such as social support, parenting styles, emotional regulation, and coping strategies.
